These were the days before IR35 became so topical for those engaged in the private sector when individuals typically worked through a Personal Services Company (PSC) and were allowed to determine their own tax status: quite often the contractor would declare they were “outside” IR35 meaning that their client or hirer did not need to deduct tax or NI from the fees paid to them.
So what did you do with all that tax free salary and dividends? Perhaps you invested in a second home? Or a speculative property abroad sold as a Collective Investment Scheme by the likes of Harlequin: which has now gone bust with zero assets.
